When it comes to choosing a domain name for your website or blog, it can be time consuming if you allow it.  Let’s face it, it’s pretty important as it is the first thing about your site that people will see and hear.  You want it to be something your clients or readers can remember easily, so that they have no problem getting back to it if they wish.  You also don’t want it to be offensive or too long to recall back later.  When it’s time to register a domain name, you want it to be as perfect as possible, but don’t overthink it!  If your still struggling after reading my tips, then my suggestion is to ask a friend or someone you trust of their opinion on the matter.  Brainstorming with others usually helps.  There are also many online domain name generators that you can use online that might be able to help you, push come to shove. Let me know what tip worked best for you!

  • What is your niche? Incorporate it into your domain name if possible. If you have a food website that shares recipes, perhaps you may want to put “recipes” in the name, or if you are a interior designer, perhaps “design” might be something you may want to add.
  • Have a company name already? Use it as your domain name to expand your business. You may be just fine in doing this as long as the domain name isn’t already registered with someone else. If your company name is already taken, try a play with words, adding “the” to the beginning of the domain name or your location at the end of the domain name. For instance, “InteriordesignofTampa” instead of just “interiordesign” may work out better for you.
  • Keep the domain name short and sweet. The shorter the domain name, the easier it is for everyone to recall / remember, and it looks less like spam.
  • Make the domain name unique Try not to pick a name that may be easily confused with a different company, person, place or thing. That sounds hard to do but it doesn’t have to be. Just try to make it unique to you and what you are trying to portray or achieve on the internet. You want people to think of you when they see your blog or your quality of work, and not someone else.
  • Using keywords or branding in your domain name is a Plus. An example of this is you make custom design keys for a living, so your blog is”customdoorkeys” or something to that effect. This example has “keywords” that people are searching for in the name itself. An example of a branded domain would be “Macys” or “Costco”. The domain does not have keywords, but rather the name of a brand as it’s title.
  • Remember your domain name is your First Impression on others. What do you want readers or prospective customers, clients and employers to think of you? Keep this in mind as you think of the perfect name. You may not want to make the name something that can seem offensive or off putting to others, even if that’s not the intention.
